Can you boot into safe mode?

you can get into safe mode by tapping F8 when you boot your machine. see if that works and let us know.

I left it up over night on the "starting windows"screen and when I woke up it prompted me to do the first log in steps. I did and got to my desktop. Only to find that the problems I was trying to solve with this factory reset have not been solved. I probably can get into safe mode but it will most likely take hours

Wow seems obvious that something went wrong during the reset, just wondering why you performed the reset in the first place were you experiencing problems? If so can you describe them? I ask this because what you are experiencing right now sounds like hard drive issues.

If you are able to get into windows try perform a scan disk

1) click start
2) click computer
3) right click on your c:/ drive
4) click properties
5) click tools and then check disk

Sorry im not in front of a pc right now so cant be exact but you will find the scan disk option.

It will say that scan disk cannot perform a scan disk right now..... Blah blah do you want to schedule scan disk for the next time you restart? Click yes then restart

If during scan disk it finds errors! Personally i would swap out the disk for a new one...

Other than the above you could try to do the factory restore again....

Hope that helps

I've performed chkdsk in command prompt and it came up with no errors. I'll run it again from windows though. I factory reset because it failed to log on once then after the while thing was slow. I couldn't load any media. Most pages internet or files window would freeze and say not responding. After I got on this morning it had the exact same issues nothing was fixed
