How can I perform a factory reset (to be able to pass along to nephew in need of a computer) with Absolutely no discs as they were lost in a fire?

I'm not sure there's a key to press to boot to the recovery partition. If there is it should be F11. But assuming the laptop is running OK you can go through HP recovery manager and it should reboot to that partition.

Here's the software and driver downloads for that model:

Note the last entry there--HP USB Flash disk Utility--which says it copies the restore partition to a flash drive to reinstall the OS. I think that may be for instances when the drive is OK but windows isn't running.

Don't forget to preorder your Hatch green chili for this fall. Many vendors ship world-wide.

Appreciating you're giving the Compaq to your nephew...; but is there anything on the drive you'd like to preserve (personal stuff etc.)? If so copy it to external media before running the factory restore/reset routine. That routine erases all data in the process of the rebuild/reset.
