External Hard drive won't open

Specs: Windows 7, 2.0GHz/1GB
Hello there,
I am running on windows 7 ultimate, i been plugging and unplugging my Hard Drive and it wont open now. the computer keeps telling me to format the disk. Can someone give me tips or can help in anyway? i don't want to lose my files.

That often means the drive has failed, which is why I have three separate external drives in use, each with the same files on them. External drives are less reliable than internal ones so it's risky only have one of them.

You can test the drive with the maker's diagnostic software. The links are top of this page: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm...

You can also plug the drive into a different computer to see if it works properly, because very often it's the host computer that's at fault when it wants to format the drive, not the drive itself. That happened to me recently. My main PC wanted to format, but my laptop read the drive no problem.

So I restored my main PC from a recent backup image and that fixed the format issue.
