External Drives not readable on XP after win7

Specs: Windows XP
I have a USB thumb drive and (USB) external hard drive which I have used to back up my systems with. After using these devices with my Windows 7 system, I try to read them on my windows XP system and cannot read them. The "properties" indicate the data is on the drive, but I cant see it using any method on Widows XP.

I can read the information again on the Windows 7 machine, but the data has effectively disappeared on XP.

Both systems are Dell, file system for XP is NTFS.

Plug in the drive, boot XP, use disk management ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309000 ) to give it a drive label.
