Specs: Windows 7
External USB drive was used with XP. It is now connected to a Win 7 computer. I cannot make modifications to locked files without administrator rights. How do I obtain them?
Thank you

I cannot take ownership of the drive. I right click properties on the drive letter, then click security, then advanced, then owner, then edit, then other users or groups. I enter my user name from the win 7 system & click ok. I get a message that the object with the user name cannot be found. The window will not let me browse or select another location other than the old XP system listed.

You can search for your correct user name in that step.

Create a user called everyone then give it all the rights including take ownership.

The user has to be you. You don't set the user as some unknown name. Do you know your own users name?
