How is your external hdd connected to your computer ? Thru e-sata ? Thru USB ?

I suggest you check documentation of your HP Compaq.

Is the USB port working ? When you connect another device such as USB flash disk, is it recognized ?

When you connect your hdd to another computer, is it recognized in Windows ?

Wait. You are trying to boot a external hard drive with windows 7 on it? Don't think it works that way.

Please let us know what your are trying to accomplish. Did you pull a hard drive out of one computer and are now trying to boot it on another using an external USB enclosure? Please be detailed in your explanation. Thanks
