Extended Desktop stopped working in Windows 7

Specs: Windows 7, core2duo T7300, 2GB DDR2
Hi,

Ive been having a new problem. I've been using my thinkpad T61 (T7300, Nvidia NVS140m video) with the lenovo dock. Ive hooked up an external monitor to the DVI port and was using extended desktop (across the laptop and external monitors) under Windows 7 (and vista before that) with no problem. Now the external monitor intermittently cuts out and receives no signal. It will spontanously return without warning, sometimes.
Reboot or hard boot will restore it, for a few mins. then it will cut out again.
Display settings under windows do not change. The desktop space is there, but just not visible on the screen. The monitor detects no signal and goes into power-save (as if i turned off the source and left the monitor on).
video drivers are up to date.
Monitor connections/cables are intact and windows recognizes that external lcd is connected.

any ideas?
thanks

Try borrowing a different cable from a different computer, the cable might look good on the outside but have a problem internally in a connector or the wire itself.
Try the monitor on a different computer to make sure it is working (don't make assumptions)
Try a different monitor (borrow one)
This will eliminate the possibility of an external hardware issue.
After that it could only be software or internal hardware.
