Aha, I was just about to post about thumbnails - this lot I found on a website:

=================================
The Reason this error occurs is that the file size that your are trying to view is larger than 4 Gig in size, contained in that folder, and as thumbnails would be set for this error to occur, the rich preview handler that creates the thumbnail can't and therefore crashes.

Solution,
Remove "Thumbnail View" on that particular folder containing the large file (a Blu Ray MKV Video File is the usual culprit) and select view List or Detail so the rich preview handler doesn't need to create the thumbnail, this may be a problem trying to change the thumbnail to list or detail when inside the folder, so, right click the folder before opening it , go properties and select Advanced Tab (windows 7) then under the popup titles advanced attributes, UNTICK the selected option saying {Allow Items contained in this folder to be indexed} this also helps.

I will make this clear, it is not the Haali Splitter codec file causing the problem, it is the folder showing thumbnails that's all, and it can't find the midway point of the video file quick enough to create the thumbnail cause it's just too big in data size of that particular Movie.

if you can get into the folder click Thumbnail View ASAP top right of the folder with the icon that looks like 4 window panes and change it to details.

=================================

Seems you found something similar yourself. You only need to do it to the folder containing the mkv file. Glad to hear the problem is resolved and thanks for letting us know.

There is some information here about the mkv file type:
http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/arc...

Looks as if VLC Player (free) is what you need. You won't regret it
because VLC can play all sorts of files that other players cannot.

Here's a link to it:

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

The Kmplayer software installed on my computer and I've watched the films Mkv format, but yesterday when I wanted to watch a video, One message that came windows explorer has stopped working and windows explorer restarted and I could not run the program.but no problem for the rest of the movie. I read a text in Microsoft site but I did not understand the ending. can you help me?

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...
: ( in this site is written) For me this problem was related with the DivX codec pack...

This worked for me:

Look at the Event Logs for clues about the crash.
1. Click Start, type eventvwr.msc and press [ENTER}
2. Expand "Windows Logs" category, and select "Application"
3. Identify the entry shows in Red exclamation icon, which matches the date/time at which the Windows Explorer crash occurred. (if u can't find it recreate event!)
4. Uninstall / re-install program that caused the crash - try to open the file to confirm fix.

I have difficulties with this statement:
"I could not run the program.but no problem for the rest of the movie".
If you couldn't start the movie then how did you manage to watch the rest?

On that MS link, how far did you get and which part didn't you understand?

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

On that MS link in #2, how far did you get and which part didn't you understand?

There are a lot of hits in Google for this issue, worth checking through them, but avoid any suggestions requiring changes to be made in the registry:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?sour...

Other ideas:
1. Use either Media Player Classic or VLC Player (both are free).

2. Convert the file to a more usual video format using Super File Converter (also free).

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Nothing personal but I'm not a Facebook user and I don't normally disclose my email address.

Glad to have helped, although this time (the way I read it), I only found something which expanded on what you had already discovered for yourself.

Well done!
