Edit Windows 7 config.nt & autoexec.nt files

December 1, 2010 at 20:15:55
Specs: Windows 7 PRO 32 bits
My DOS apps require that I edit config.nt and autoexec.nt to emulate a FRENCH keyboard on a W.7 system. Can anyone indicate the syntax of the commands .. country.sys ... keyboard.sys
to add to both files.

This link is provided as "food for thought" only:

I doubt that Windows 7 is different to Vista in this respect.

Obviously the country code figures will be wrong for French but you should be able to find them somewhere in Google..

Hold on for a bit tho because someone might drop by who knows the exact answer.

Derek :Thanks for the reply. Since my DOS apps run on all versions of W.XP I have checked my personnal XP HOME system's CONFIG and AUTOEXEC.BAT files.None makes reference to COUNTRY or KEYBOARD .In my AUTOEXEC.NT file I have disabled the only command refering to DOSX and rebooted. The french keyboard is still working OK. That means that although the ADVANCED properties of the DOS EXE.files say that %system32% CONFIG.NT and AUTOEXEC.NT are triggered while the exe loads in memory, this is not true. Then how to load FOREIGN drivers ? I have evan tried to run my EXE files from CMD then COMMAND since both manage the french keyboard. Total failure, the US keyboard is loaded again.

Well, I haven't been involved with any of this since the dark days of W95/W98 and obviously things are a whole heap different with XP onwards, especially because there is no true DOS. Hope you get it sorted somehow.

Thanks a lott 0DEREK the link you provided contains the exact answer. To emulate a French kboard layout on a VISTA, (some XPs) and Windows 7 sytems while running a DOS 16bits EXE file the syntax is as follows :
Add to the end of CONFIG.NT : COUNTRY=032,850,C:\Windows\System32\COUNTRY.SYS then to the end of AUTOEXEC.NT : C:\Windows\System32\KB 16 FR,850,C:\Windows\System32\KEYBOARD.SYS
To check, type the EDIT command from the CMD screen to load the 16 bit DOS EDIT exe file and type A Z E R T Y or Q W E R T Y. Both NT files will trigger the new layout and we can enjoy W.7 together with DOS apps without running XP MODE.
