Specs: Windows Xp, dell dimension 3000 1 GB RAM
i'm trying to install a dvd version of windows 7 on a dell dimension 3000 pentium 4 2.8 ghz. Just as the decision was made and the disk was put in the DVD drive and f12 is pushed to change the boot sequence, the only drive showing is my CD drive. what now?

Your system's BIOS may only support one bootable optical drive. First try going into your BIOS set up and changing your boot order there so that the drive is bootable and first in boot order. if that is not possible, turn off, unplug your CD drive and try setting your boot order again. After Windows 7 is installed, you can always reinstall the drive and it's drivers as secondary to your DVD drive.
NOTE: Did you do a Windows 7 compatibility test in the Windows 7 website? If not do it first. Note also that to install W7 over XP you will have to do a clean install (back up your files first or you will loose them).

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
If all else fails, read instructions.

i can't clean install windows xp either because the dvd doesn't show in the boot sequence. i have tried to boot windows 7 from the usb flash and that doesn't show installed in the bios. when i unplugged the cd from the ide it said i had no drive installed. windows xp still shows it's installed and working, lights work and drive opens. i have installed windows xp via dvd on this machine in the past. the dvd drive is an after market install by me that has worked for some time perfectly. it's a sony dvd reader writer drive. i've got two HD's installed so all my info is backed up and i'm ready to go with a clean install, but i'm not sure where to go from here.....
