Don't turn off firewall when you are online.
Are they Windows 7 compatible?
What OS is the other machine?
Is the download from a site you trust?
Have you tried running them as Windows XP compatible?

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Google 'Opensource Games' for trusted sites (the OpenSource movement has strong backing and is safer).
Always leave firewall on.
Make sure any download is scanned for infections before opening.
Check Antivirus logs to see if it found a problem with the download and stripped out a hidden program.
Note that a game that was once safe, may no longer be safe now. The original publisher may no longer control it and others may accept tag-a-long's to help pay to keep it out there, or it may be being used as a means for spreading malware because of it's one time popularity and reputation.
