Download and run application

January 14, 2018 at 18:16:44
Specs: Windows 7
Why did I get a pop-up from Microsoft for "make msn my homepage?" msn.com is and has been my homepage. Scam or what. They offered to download and "run" an application.

Thanks for your help.

Never run an application that appears as a pop-up unless you intentionally started some type of download. Scan your machine for malware ASAP.

Thanks for your reply. On my home page where the town and current temperate was shown. instead of the weather information was "make msn my homepage." At the very bottom of the page was the download, run or safe thing. A file about 2.4 MB. A google search for "make msn my homepage" brings what looks like an Microsoft page, but very little other information. Now I have the weather back.

I would be inclined to run this, which looks for browser related malware in particular:

AdwCleaner:

Download and "Save" the file somewhere. Go to the saved file then double click it to run the program. Use the "Scan" button, followed by the "Clean" button.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Hi Derek,

Thanks for your reply I took your suggestion and downloaded and ran the program. It deleted a C:\windows\SysNative\drivers\swdumon.sys file. Also, deleted two "downloaded Installers. Finally deleted "tracking keys" and "Winsock settings cleared.."

I have Malwarebytes Premium program.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Derek,

I was really trying to ask a question, instead of fixing a computer problem, As I did not download, save or run the “make msn my homepage” program, I was hoping that someone had some information about the “New York Weather” being changed to “make msn my home page.” I think that my computer is the same today as it before. So no problem. Would like to know what would happen if I had said “run” instead of closing the window? Google is always wanting to change my browser. Maybe, Microsoft did this for some reason. I find it strange that doing a google search “make msn my homepage,” got some hits. That indicates to me that other people have seen this also. If this happens to me again, I still would not say to “run” the program with what information I have at the present time. I appreciate your interest in this matter.
