Stated I am a XP lover and I am still running it toghether witI Office XP on an aged box for daily duties, I agree with StuartS and strongly reccomend you buy a pre-configured system with Win 7 or 8 then install a virtual machine to run your legacy applications.

To install Win XP on a modern system from scratch is a Chinese enterprise and success is not assured. I too am planning to leave my loved XP environment for Win 8 running virtual machines (that do perfectly the legacy jobs).

Keep Windows 7 and run XP as a virtual machine within it.

Read/download Oracle’s VirtualBox here https://www.virtualbox.org/ It can be installed in XP and above, including the Home Premium versions. It can guest operating systems from MS-DOS upwards. Remember that the Windows version you intend to install must be genuine.

View the User Manual here https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/c...

If you have Win7 Pro, you can run WinXP in a pre-configured virtual machine for free with Windows XP Mode.

Or you can use Widows Virtual in Machine in Windows 7 Home premium, but you have to supply your own copy of Widows XP Professional.

If your legacy applications were developed for DOS, you can install VirtualBox or MS Virtual PC under Win 7/8 and then run as guest OS FreeDOS, the open source free MS DOS clone. In that way all software you need (virtual machine and guest operating system) is absolutely free and you have an up to date system.

Probably not.

You would probably find it difficult if not impossible to find Windows XP drivers for a modern i3,i5,,i7 computer. You would need to do a lot of research beforehand to find out if drivers are available.

Installing in a virtual machine and you use the host Operating systems drivers.

Another alternative nobody else metioned is to get an older PC. These days you can pick up a working older PC for next to nothing. Buy one and install XP on it.

If it were me I'd talk to a couple local computer stores (not "electronics stores but businesses that ONLY sell computers and computer peripherals) and you may find you can buy some older, but brand new still in the box equipment that will run XP nicely and get that hardware dirt cheap. That or they might have an older working PC kicking around they'll sell cheap.
