You need to specify whether you use Hotmail on the web (ie you only use their website for Hotmail) or you have set it up to use with an email client (eg Office Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird) on your computer.

hello Phil,
Hotmail is set up to be used with an email client, Office Outlook. thank you so much for trying to help!! I have also another email t-online.de, both in Office Outlook. I used to received a pop-up screen asking my Pop -something password. I was able to ignore that request up until yesterday when one friend installed hotmail into my smartphone. many greetings from Germany:-)

How many email addresses are setup in your Outlook mail client?
Since your friend installed "hotmail" on your phone, is that setup as POP or IMAP?
Did your friend change something on your PC?

More an observation than a request for help... As who knows it may promote further ideas re' the problem as per the OP?

I've been having similar intermittent problems with hotmail too; downloading old emails each time I reboot/restart my iPhone and occasionally my iPad. Also with my BT Yahoo account...

Both accounts are setup as POP system on my iDevices; nothing has changed on either device... Yet the double/multiple downloads occur...

I suspect the problems lie with MS/Hotmail servers - tweaking and so on...; similarly with BT and their Yahoo servers... BT certainly have had (and acknowledged even last year, and in 2015) problems various there.

There is no other logical explanation if one hasn't made any changes to the account settings/installation?

My MS-Office/Outlook-2011 (Mac OSX system) settings (clients) for both Hotmail and BT Yahoo remain unchanged; and Hotmail doesn't duplicate downloads, whereas the BT account does on my Mac Mini, but not my Macbook. Both run el capitan...

There may be issues between Apple and Hotmail and Yahoo based email utilities?

If you have multiple mail clients (PC, Phone, tab, etc..) use IMAP on your mail clients. Emails will stay on the server till you delete it on one the mail clients. The mail client will reflect what is on the mail server, so no double or missing emails. And you still have a backup on the server that can be accessed over web.

POP was designed as a one-on-one protocol, just to move the stored emails from the server to one email client.

the drawback with imap is that it syncs changes made on device to all the others accessing the account. Thus if you delete something from one download on one device, it disappears from all the others too, email server included. POP doesn't do this, and thus one can "safely..." leave a copy on server (when the options is set correctly) and any other device too. Equally once downloaded from the server to any device/computer's client, if one then deletes the server copy it still remains on the assorted devices.

I prefer POP because it doesn't sync/mirror changes made on one device/client to all the others. And leaving a copy on the server is one way to ensure one can access it from wherever etc.; and is a form of cloud storage in effect.

Until about a week or so ago the duplicate/multiple downloads wasn't an issue... But "sumat hath changed" at Hotmail and Yaoo to cause the problem now...
