Divide Windows 7 laptop hard drive

October 16, 2011 at 03:31:40
Specs: Windows 7, Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU 2.40 Hz
When I received my laptop I had only one C:\ partition and Recovery D:\ partition . I want to devide my C:\ partition to 2 more E:\ and F:\ since it is 450GB and in case of some problem I don't have a backup partition to store my datas. Moreover, I want to install Linux OS, that's why I want one more partition drive on my laptop.

PLease Can anyone tell me how to split my C:\ partition in to two more?

First, back up needs to be on a completely separate hard drive since a hard drive crash would bring down your back up also. On a laptop (since most do not have room for a second hard drive) use an external hard drive for back up.
Second, look in Disk Manager to see how many partitions it shows since many system manufacturers not already have 1- a boot partition, 1- your C drive, 3- your recovery partition, and often 4- (HP & possibly others) a tools or recovery manager. IF you have 3 only, you may be fine, but if you already have 4, then you may be screwed since the limit of primary partitions is 4. If you have 3, then you can shrink C and create an extended partition which can have many logical drives on it. If you have 4 already, the only way you can do this is to purchase (or sometimes make) a recovery disk set for restoring your hard drive and then delete the recovery and tools partitions and then shrink C. All this you can do with Disk Manager in Windows 7.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
