Solved Difference btwn mass storage & USB mass storage Definition

February 23, 2015 at 11:26:51
Specs: Windows 7
Got a 8 gb usb that doesnt show up in "my computer" in my acer netbook. It does show up in device manager as "mass storage". When I click this, it says the drivers are not installed. When I try to install or update drivers, it says "the best driver is already installed for this device"

This same usb does work in other laptops, but in device manager it shows up as "usb mass storage".

Other 8 gb usbs also work in this acer netbook and they also show up as "usb mass storage".

For some odd reason this one 8 gb usb does not work on just the acer netbook and shows up as "mass storage" instead of "usb mass storage". Any ideas how to fix this? Everything laptop is windows 7

"It would take a while to get 8 gb of data out of the usb"
It shouldn't take too long, just make a folder on your hard disk and copy/paste the whole lot into it. Then you can format the flash drive on another computer. If it then works properly you just copy/paste the contents of the folder you saved back into the flash drive.

I'm assuming we are right that this is a "flash (or pen)" drive - a small stick, as it is only 8 GB. This sort of thing:

The term USB is general and can mean, for example, a small USB external hard disk or just a reference to the USB socket itself.

Presumably this is a Flash Drive (sometimes called Pen Drive or Key). Have you tried formatting it on a the computer it runs on correctly - right click option from drive? Worth a shot in case something has glitched.

Your netbook may have a capacity limit lower than 8GB. I have seen this with SD cards in card readers. Is this what you have. Provide more details on what type of storage device you have.

Are you sure the 'mass storage' seen in device manager is actually that 8 gig flash drive? Maybe it's something else like an SD card port When the flash drive isn't connected does 'mass storage' still show in device manager?

In the properties section, it says generic usb flash drive. Other ":generic usb flash drives" that are also 8 gb do work in this acer netbook .It is an Acer Aspire D255E. I gues i would try to format it if no other solution comes up. It would take a while to get 8 gb of data out of the usb. And the "mass storage" in device manager does show up only when connecting this particular usb in this acer netbook.

You didn't state if that drive shows up in Disk Management or not.

Yes it does show up in disk management and it is a small usb stick. My confusion is that other small 8 gb usb sticks work fine except this particular one and it doesnt work only in my acer netbook.

Yes, I agree that is very odd. Maybe it would be best after all to format it on the Acer Netbook when you've taken the files off. You could then test it by just copying one file to it. I guess you should also check to see if the other computers see it then too.
