Specs: Windows 7, i5
Hi, I have just bought HP Probook 4520s. It has the graphic card ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6370. windows 7 professional.

My desktop is too big initially (icon, bottom bar is too big etc), so I was trying to make it smaller to avoid this limited view. but the resolution maximam I can have is 1366 x 768. I updated the driver from hp site, but what CATALYST Control Center propose is also 1366 x 768 maximam.

Would you please help me if I can have avoid this limitted view and have smaller icons, bottom bar etc? I do not care about less display quality.

Thank you very much for your assistance in advance

Internet explorer: to change size hold control + shift and the "-" to make smaller and "+" to make bigger.

go to control panel, click display make sure smaller is selected. It should be the default setting but may have changed.

When in display, on the left side you should see set custom text size. You can use this to adjust text size to your liking.

If that doesn't help make sure you have the latest driver installed. Make sure you have 32bit true color selected. can you take a screen shot and upload to something like photobucket and post link here so I can see what your seeing with everything being to big for you?

1366 x 768 is the max resolution for the monitor. Is that resolution setup in your windows display screen resolution? If so try this, right click on the start menu button, click properties, then go to taskbar tab and check the "use small icons" box and click ok

Thank you very much for your reply. aceisaneight. it partially solved my problem.
yeah, I am at 1366x 768. In my previous PC I bought 3 years ago, I could easily set the desktop size as I need (vista). but this new pc only allows me 1366 x 768 which is waisting the space for me. it is very disappointing because it limits the view. do you know how to make each component of desktop smaller further?

for icons: right click on your desktop, go to view and you should see large icons, medium icons, and small icons. Pick which you like best. Is there anything else you need adjusted?

Thank you aceisaneight again. With my setting, it is already small icon selected. I can not make it smaller than that. in fact my problem is that when I open the browser or other application, each component of those are too big. I want to use the space efficiently and I do not need the text so big because I can read small letter. With my previsou PC with vista. I could simply change the resolution and the size was just fine. I do not know if it is graphic card or windows 7 problem but it is actually annoying for me

1- Make sure you downloaded the correct driver for your system.
2- Remember your system is still under warranty, HP knows your system best, contact them for free and get their advice on the settings and what resolution you should be offered as options.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Thank you again aceisaneight. It seems that I have done all you mentioned and still big for me. I will update the screenshot in picasa

My old laptop with either windows vista or windows server 2003 was this size(1400x 1050)
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/pho...

My new pc which I am not happy about the size is
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/pho...

As you can see, there are big differences between those two desktop. I want to have more space to control the visual element like the previous PC.

Thank you Fingers too for your advice

The new laptop pic looks normal to me. I'm not sure if you can really go much smaller. I think it is probably due to the different resolution sizes you have between the laptops. If somebody else knows please jump in.

The screen resolution is normal.
To get smaller icons than the preset of windows use following method.
Scroll while keeping Ctrl+Windows pressed.
Smaller ain't possible also won't give you much room since the spacing between icons won't change.
Otherwise use a launchbar to get better organised without using much space on your windows desktop.

Thank you aceisaneight for your total presence. Thank you Rho for your advice too.
It gave me good chips to make the desktop element smaller.
with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6370, I can not set up 1600x 900 then? it is not technically possible or it make the screen agly. if it is the second, I want to have it because what I worry is not the resolution(clearness) but the space and size of each software.

You can't go any higher than 1366 x 768 in screen resolution. That is the max resolution for your laptop monitor which is a hardware limitation. The only way around it that I can really think of is to get a laptop that supports a higher resolution screen or connect your laptop to an external monitor with a higher resolution max.

Hi, I was facing the same problem of BIG icons too. I selected "Small Icon" again from right-click > view > small icons. Even it was already selected. And the icon size reduced !!

Thanks to aceisaneight.
