Desktop Icons Freeze on new laptop

Specs: Windows 64
Just bought new Packard Bell laptop and have been working steadily through a transfer of all software and files from old desktop. Spec..i3processor, 4gb Mem, 500gb HD, running windows 7 - 64 bit
I have found from first day that the icons often freeze. I can be busy working and loading various things and when you come back to fire up an alternative programme..... nothing works via any desktop icons....but if I go into start up I can fire up programme normally without any issues.
Currently I have to reboot each time to clear this problem, but it returns and the curse is that you have no idea when it will happen or why?
Any body out there dealt with this problem, or any ideas as to why this occurs?

'I have found from first day that the icons often freeze'
Take it back to where you got it, sounds like a lemon from the start. Do it while it's under warranty

Some HELP in posting on Computing.net plus free progs and instructions Cheers

No it was like this from start up. I thought it was a simple issue that I could deal with once I was accustomed to the machine....efectively I thought I was doing something wrong.....but everything I have tried does not resolve this problem.
Sometimes it does not occur for several hours, other times it is every hour or so.
