Desktop icons are now .doc files

Specs: Windows 7, 2gb
All my desktop files and applications are displayed as word documents.When I try to open them,it opens with microsoft word,including .exe files.I tried scanning with Avast but it is not recognising it.Which virus removal utility should I use or is there any way I can fix this problem.Pliz help,Im desperate.Thank u.

First try to open the applications by using the start menu or browsing to the program exe to determine if the only issue is corrupted desktop shortcuts. If that is the case then just delete the shortcuts and recreate them.

I wonder if you've accidentally chosen Word as the default program for all of the icons. I don't know if that would change the extention, but it might. Try this. Right click on an Icon and choose properties. Then in the General tab, the third line down says "Open With" Click change, and choose the right program. I don't know if that will work or not. You might just have a virus.
