Can anyone help with Dell Vostro audio problems (3550)

i have always had problems with audio & microphone unputs on all the Vostros I've had - terrible software! Never had a problem on another laptop!

It doesn't recognise headphones when plugged in using USB - I have to go to Skype each and every time to manually choose the headphones and microphone.

Also - when i plug in a headphone set using the two plugs (not USB) I cannot get any way to get the Vostro to recognise the microphone.

I've tried everything - but cannot find any way to get the microphone to be recognised - I know the microphone works as I've tried it on another PC.

Everything else works fine on the Windows 7 laptop.

Any clues on how to fix this?

I can't say for certain that this is your problem but with ANY HD sound I have worked with, you MUST select the output jack and what you are using it for. You do that by actually clicking on the icon of the jack (port) in Sound Manager. You must do that even if the setting appears to be correct.

This is because all the jacks are controlled by software instead of being hard wired to one function only.

Do you have a sound manager icon in the tray by the clock? May be an orange speaker.

I have tried clicking on all the options for the headset mic to be used - but no luck.

Can't see any other reason it won't work.

This is only a problem I've had with Vostro laptops - all others recognise headsets find.
