Dell desktop works only in Win 7 safe mode

Dell / Dim4400...

Specs: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, 1.794 GHz / 767 MB
My computer, which is running on Windows 7, does not turn on. It gets to the point where it says "welcome" and there is a blue screen. I waited about 2 minutes, only to have the screen turn completely black except for the mouse. I turned it off and back on, and the same thing happened. I tried turning it on using Safe Mode, and that is what I have now. It seems to be working, but I restarted again without safe mode and it didn't work, so it's only working with safe mode. Any ideas what's wrong/how to fix it?

It sounds like a driver update that was incorrect, possibly through windows update. Try doing a system restore in safe mode. If this does not help, try a scan with malwarebytes in safe mode. Then, remove anything from start up that is not absolutely needed. If there was any hardware or software you installed recently, uninstall it.
If these do not help, you will probably need to do a repair install with your install disk or recovery disk/partition.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

you may also have a memory issue or drive damage, try a memory check, and drive check repair.
mem check press F8 before windows boots and choose mem check, drive check and repair, right click on the drive C;/, properties/tools/error check, check both will take a while if you have a big drive, but is worth the time..

i hate computers!
but cant help myself....

I tried all these things and one of them must have worked, because my computer is working fine now. Thanks, all!
