In Internet Explorer, Tools>Internet Options>Delete under browsing History, and select everything significant to you, then OK.
In Firefox, Tools>Clear Recent History and select everything significant to you., then OK
You can never be 100% sure, but that should usually do it.
You can also go to your router and clean out any record there (see it's manual for details) of sites that were visited.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
If all else fails, read instructions.

I have been told though that this is not fool proof.....ie people in the know can still see where you have been...

Anything you delete can be recovered by the right people with the right software. Over time, the drive segments will contain different information, and it will finally be gone, defragmenting a drive may help since many segments are moved back and fourth on the drive to make space for the fragments to be inserted though. There are programs that will write ones and zeros across an entire drive, but that will erase windows and all of the files you still want to keep. The safest, is to NEVER visit any site that will get you into that much trouble in the first place. If you need to simply hide something from your kids, the clean up is more than enough. If you need to hide from your boss who has an IT staff to help him, Portable Apps installed on a 2Gig or larger USB flash drive, all of the memory of browsing with it will be removed with the flash drive (read up on it). If you are trying to hide from the FBI (or similar), don't even bother trying, they can always get the info from the ISP's records.

Do what fingers first said, THEN do a search on your Hard Drive for index.dat files, that's the secret place IE strores urls and junk, and erase them. Ignore his paranoia on the second post. If you want to totally remove a file so it can't be recovered by anyone, including every 3 letter organization, use a secure file deletion program, super shredder from www.analogx.com (free) is a good choice. Besides, corporate infowar is lightyears beyond what the NSA can do. The stuff Sony and Oracle do against each other would make a spy's wet dream. Oh, never heard about this war between them before? Imagine that. Like I said, a spy's wet dream - opps, brb, someone on knocking on my door...what? YOU! HOW!? WHAT ARE YOU DOIN.................

Just download some cleaner. I'm cleaning with a cool program called mil shield. It cleans all index.dat structures where actually are whole internet, search and applications history. Firefox or Internet Explorer can not delete all history.
