Specs: Windows 7
I have a Compaq CQ6 running Windows 7 and Office 2012. It flashed the screen and then refused to boot normally afterwards. It would only display up to the Compaq logo and then go to a black screen.I have booted it into safe mode but am at a loss as to where to approach the problem. There were no error messages at anytime prior to or after the event.Where do I go from here?

Something you recently installed (just before the problem started) may be interfering with Windows ability to start in Normal Mode. It's usually a third-party driver, third-party firewall, antivirus software, or CD/DVD burning software.

Since Safe Mode does not load any third-party drivers, that's how we know what is most likely to be causing the problem. So, using Safe Mode, un-install anything you have recently installed until the problem is solved.

1. Click the Start button, type msconfig in the search box, and then, in the list of results, click msconfig.exe. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

2. In the System Configuration dialog box, click the Boot tab.

3. Under boot option Uncheck the box next to Safe boot and apply the settings and restart the computer.

Another option:
In Safe Mode, Start a System Restore. Restore to a point say a week before you noticed any issues with the computer at all. Once it completes and restarts, scan with Malwarebytes just in case this was caused by an infection. Running a System Restore will roll back installs, updates, drivers, and your registry, but will not effect your personal files.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
