Why would you have 100 windows open? And what exactly are you trying to copy & where are you pasting it?

I would recommend a System Restore to a date before you began having problems (at least a few days, probably a week). Then re-update Java, run Windows update, and for good measure, run Malwarebytes to be sure it was not an infection. Restart and try again but avoid keeping that many windows (or even tabs) open at any one time. Try to keep it to around a dozen, less when possible for best performance.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

i exaggerated a bit - more like 4 or 5 dozen windows open (multi-tasking fanatic). in any event i'm doing things like copying a j.peg from a file into a word document. i have been do it for years with no issue. thanks.

Thanks for the recommendation (and advice) but restoring did not solve the problem. It was actually my first inclination as well. Back to the drawing board!

If you made an image of your hard drive and have a current back up (since the back up is only your files and some settings, you actually can make the back up now, but the image needs to be from before the problem), you can reimage the drive from the copy and bring it back to current with your back up, you may be in good shape in just over a half an hour (depending on the back up and drive sizes). Otherwise search MS site for copy/paste repairs.
