computer will not boot up fully

Specs: Windows 7
the computer successfully boots to a certain extent and then it just turns to a black screen with the mouse on it and does nothing at all! can anyone please help me

More information (like background to how this started) would be useful.

Have you tried safe mode (keep tapping the F8 key before windows starts loading - ie from when you turn the machine on). if it loads you could try a system restore back to before the problem started.

If following Steve Dunns suggestion to return to last known working configuration and other options shown on the options screen displayed after tapping F8 while booting up does not work then:

You may may need a CD/DVD to affect a repair.
For this you will need the Windows 7 DVD. Do you have it?

If you do NOT have as is normally the case then you could try downloading the "Windows 7 System Recovery Discs" from here:

You will need to install a bit torrent client like uTorrent to be able to download as the links are torrent links.

sounds to me like there is a CD in the drive and it's trying to read it, thus the blinking cursor and black screen. Remove the CD and try rebooting.
