Acer Aspire as5535-5452 notebook pc - am...

Specs: Windows 7
I use my laptop on my lap and whenever I need to
get up for one reason or the other and set the
laptop down, when I come back the computer is
completely off.
Current Power settings
(plugged in)
dim the display: 5 minutes
turn off the display: 30 minutes
put the computer to sleep: never

Also, it turns off a few minutes after being set down on my carpet, which I guess since its a floor could be a hard surface, but its pretty soft

If you set it down and it is OK, but is off later when you come back, check your power settings. Set computer to never shut off, set monitor to power down after 10 minutes idle, hard drive to power down after 15min idle, and sleep or hibernate after 20min.
If the small jar of setting it down on a hard surface turns if off, then you will need to look for a loose connection. That might mean opening it up, but first check the easy stuff. Remove and reset your battery (might not be fully seated), remove and reseat your memory, and any accessible plugs. If this laptop is under warranty, bring it back for the authorized service to check all internal connectors. If not, you might want to do this, but if you're not comfortable doing it, you might want a professional to look at it.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Laptops get really HOT when set down on a carpet or a comforter on bed etc....try maybe using a laptop cooler while even resting on your lap.

You can download SIW and check to see how hot the laptop is running

Current Power settings
(plugged in)
dim the display: 5 minutes ....change to never
turn off the display: 30 minutes....change to never
put the computer to sleep: never

When it is plugged in via power supply I would just set the screensaver to run after 10 minutes.

Check out this home-made laptop cooler:
