Is the fan on the cpu running? Overheating will make it shutdown.....faulty power supply, defective motherboard......does it beep or show anything of the bios screen?

Is this machine an home-built unit ? Please check if CPU fan connector is connected to the correct fan header and not to the case fan header. Most often they look identical and close to one another.

If the time span between startup and shutdown is not immediate, then you may suspect incorrect cpu heatsink mounting.

Post more details of the problem and system specs. Laptop or desktop?
Can you get into BIOS set up?
Can it boot to a CD like Memtest86 or Live Linux DVD?
Etc.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
