If your computer also has PS2 connectors for Mouse and Keyboard, you need to use a PS2 keyboard, to get it to work.

There might be a setting in the system bios, to preferably use USB-keyboard, but on old computers, this often didn't work.

You may try using an adapter from USB to PS2 and check, whether it works.

Use PS2 keyboard if available, this will always work in BIOS set up.
Many USB ports are not directly through the motherboard chipset and those will not work until Windows drivers are loaded. To find USB ports for keyboard look only rear ports directly on the motherboard. If there are USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 (often blue inside) choose only USB 2.0 ports since many early 3.0 ports were through expansion chips on the motherboard as are some USB 2.0 ports if your board has more than the typical 4 USB ports. You may have to try all of the ports or look in your motherboard manual (online) to see which are which.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Check the beep codes for your particular model. The long beep may be describing the error.
