Start by clicking the Run tab on the desktop and type MSCONFIG in the box. When the window opens up, click the Startup tab and uncheck programs that don't need to run at start up. You don't need things like printer software etc. running all the time.

Use Task Manager to determine exactly what is hogging your computer.

If you need more detail on running processes than Task manager can show you then download Process Explorer from Microsoft and install. Otherwise just turn off everything except Microsoft and antivirus programs from start up as grasshopper explains above.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
