Make sure volume is not turned way down or off in the notification area (speaker icon).

Thanks for your reply but had already checked for volume on both the computer and also the actual speakers

I'm assuming your sound works normally, re playing videos/music etc?

What about other system sounds?

I'm on Win8, but I think the route is the same:
R-click an empty area of desktop/Personalise.

At the bottom click on 'sounds'. A new pane opens.

Under the 'Sounds' tab, the Sound Scheme box should be Windows default'

If not, make it so.

You can test the various sounds;
Your USB device, 'duh-donk' sounds are listed there as, 'Device Connect / Disconnect'.

Test them... Any sound?

If you made any changes, 'apply' and ok your way out.

A sound has to be assigned to, as Peet100 mentioned, to the Device Connect. Right click on the speaker icon in your system tray and select sounds. There you will see what tasks will produce what sound.
