Solved Comp won't boot at all

Fic vi13 kit built / HOME BUILT
May 14, 2013 at 15:14:45
Specs: Win7, 3.0 ghz/4 Gigs RAM
Dell Inspiron 560, bought 10-2010. When turned on - goes thru Dell Splash Screen, then to a black screen with the white cursor flashing in the upper left corner. Goes no further. Cannot type anything on the screen, there is only clicking from the tower when you try.

F12 gets in to a test screen, blue background with white letters. Tests run and comp says all is ok.

Got into Bios set up. First boot device is the Hard Drive. There is no HD activity light flashing at any time.

Wife, whose computer it is, says it has been squirrelly for a month or six weeks.

We are thinking a dead hard drive.

Any suggestions or thoughts re?

Your title "Comp won't boot at all" is very misleading. The system does boot, the problem is that Windows doesn't load. Is the HDD being properly recognized in the BIOS? If not, the drive is probably dead. If it's still being seen, try running a hard drive diagnostics from a bootable CD. The Ultimate Boot CD has diagnostics for just about every brand HDD:

✔ Best Answer
what happens when you tap f8 on boot up and go to safe mode...will it do that?
Usually a flashing cursor means that the operating system cannot be found...

F8 did not work, only F2 and F12 as above described. Cannot get to Safe Mode. Cannot get to anything else.

Called Dell this AM and they had me run the F12 test again and claimed that it is a software problem because the hardware passed the tests. They wanted me to sign up for a support contract but I declined. However, they are mailing me a CD with the Win7 OEM system on it. I will try it when received. If it doesn't work, I will scrap the computer and buy a new one.
Thanks for your replies.

Going to junk the Dell. Bought a new HP for. Wife now has to deal with Win8 also.

Just buy a new HD on e-bay, that way you can salvage the PC ;-)
