Windows 7 does not check the ink levels, the software provided by HP is used to check the ink levels. If you go to the control paner, then Devices & Printers, when you right, I say right click on the printer and check printer properties or sometimes under preferences and sometimes under its own utiltiy......it would be in one of those menu's. If windows 7 automatically installed the printer without the disc, it may not have included those options, in which case you could download the latest driver for it from HP and reinstall using their software and it may put the ink levels feature in.

I did not look it up but if it is an older printer (like mine) HP will not have bothered to write the drivers for Windows 7 and you may have to use the Windows 7 driver which will not show you the ink levels (really annoying for me).

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
