The CD lens could be dirty or bad.

Did this just happen all of a sudden?

Are you able to boot from a CD using the drive?

If you clean the lenses & the disc drive still doesn't read CDs, but only DVDs, you might be out of luck.

To eliminate the possibility that it is windows or software related, take a bootable CD, like a Linux CD or even a bootable CD with Memtest or a disk testing utility made on another computer. Put the CD in the drive and restart (set drive as first in boot order in BIOS first). If the computer boots to the CD, then the drive is OK, and if it does not, the drive will need to be replaced. If under warrantee, your OK, if not, probably $40. to $60. is all it will cost you (desktop).

I'm thinking it's a driver when I look at the drive it doesn't read like it initially did I will consider doing the dirty deed though thanks for all the replies
