Although it should be done with all types of PC questions , whenever you ask hardware related questions , you should list the make & model system you have as well as the operating system. It helps narrow down things
For this type of problem it can be a hardware issue like a bad drive itself, a wire leading to the drive,. or in some cases a conflict between software & a driver
like programs meant for playing &/or burning CD's & DVD's.
Some times, the installation of to many programs meant to do the same thing will cause problems like this.

Usually For a Desktop system the first thing to check would be the 2 cables that provide power & data transfer, plugged in on the back of the drive, & where the 2 cables connect to the motherboard.
But Before continuing, try restarting the system and choose to run in SAFE MODE, and then check to see if it's listed in "Computer / My Computer"
Very old systems don't show up in safe mode but 99.99% of them do now.

If it works in safe mode , you have a software/driver conflict issue.
If it does not work in safe mode , there is a connection problem or it's a bad drive

A laptop drive slides into a slotted plug that is part of the motherboard, so there is no need to remove it , unless there has been work done on the unit lately and there may be the possibility of a foreign substance on the contacts.

If you need help to open the case, whether a laptop or desktop, download the service manual from the manufacturers website for opening the system and for ALL cautions you should to take.
YOUTUBE has many videos relating to ALL kinds of computer problems.
JUST REMEMBER , you need to look under YOUR make & model & the issue you have

Good Luck!
