Can't update Win7 on XP & Win7 dual boot PC

Microsoft Windows 7 home premium
August 18, 2010 at 09:59:24
Specs: Windows 7, 8gb
I am having trouble installing updates. I use Windows XP mostly but when I go back to Windows 7 I have 9 updates to install. They go through the install procedure but apparently does not install because the same thing happens again when i access Windows 7. I looked at the update history and it shows that mostly the failed updates has to do with office 2003, word viewer 2003, excel 2003 and ect.
What causes this failure to update?

Not always the updates on Microsoft operating system work as expected.
Sometimes you can solve this problem by download and install the patches manually.

I am assuming that the partition in which your boot manager is installed is the XP one. If had XP installed and then resized your partiton, or if you added a hard drive for the Win7 install, this is almost certainly the case.

If this is the case, Windows 7 will never update properly until you set its partition's boot flag. You will need to understand how to use fdisk from your recovery console to set this flag. If you are comfortable with linux, you can use Knoppix burned to a cd to boot to a gui and then use a program called gparted to set the boot flag. IMO this is much quicker and also very easy.
