Can't save W7 files back to external USB

March 20, 2010 at 07:07:51
Specs: Win 7, Athlon IIx4 630 6GB
I am unable to save a file back to an external drive once I have opened it. I can open the file, I can alter it but I can not save it back to the external drive. Even if all I do is open the file it can not be saved back to the external drive.

I have full access, full control, ownership, ect. for the drive. I have changed permissions half a dozen time but I can not get the files to save. I get the message that access to the drive is denied.

This is a brand new HP desktop with 6 GB RAM and a 1 TB SATA drive running Win 7 Home Premium.

I have 2 external drives, a 500 GB My Book and a 30 GB generic drive in an enclouser, both NT, both PATA. I have full permissions on both.

Here is the odd thing, if I change the file extention (.bmp to .jpg for example) I can then save the file as a new file!!!

Another thing, the original files on the externals were created with 32 bit Win XP Pro, if that matters. Win 7 is 64 bit.

Please help!

Software gives me a headache.

Are the files set to 'read only'?

Try changing one letter or add a number to the name and save. If it saves like I suspect, you are probably using a different user than when it was first saved or I guess from a different computer/operating system. Try moving some files (a block of them) to your internal drive, if they open and save there, then resaving them back to the external drive should truely 'fix' ownership. I believe somehow you do not 'own it' - the actual files , that is.
