cant open 320GB samsung external harddrive

Specs: Windows 7, 3.00GB
i have a 320GB samsung external hard drive when i plug it in my laptop it says format drive and when i right click to it to open it says the volume does not contain a recongnized file system it happen already and i use command promt and type chkdsk and scan for error and it work and now when i try using command promt back it says chkdsk is not availabe for raw drives

Hopefully you have all files on another drive as well. If this is the case, simply open Disk Manager, create a partition, and format it.
If the drive contains files that you must try to recover, then you must try. See if there are any useful suggestions on the above link/search. Most recovery software needs to have a proper file system in place to work which means formatting. If nothing works without formatting, then partition and format BUT use quick format only and then try recovery software again. Understand that any writing to the drive will overwrite existing files and make recovery less successful. You always should have all important files on two or more drives and critical files should be on two or more hard drives and optical media (CD/DVD) and possibly off site back up may also be a good idea.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
