I have installed a new 500 GB HD in my Dell Inspiron 1750 laptop. When trying to install Windows 7 it tells me windows cant be installed, the selected disk is of the GPT partition style and it needs EFI how do I change it to the latter

That's very strange if it's a brand new, unused internal HDD because it shouldn't have any partitions on it at all (so no partition style either) when it's never been used before. Strikes me that the HDD is a used one, not brand new.

Using Windows 7 Setup, delete all existing partitions from the HDD, then create a new partition and try installing Windows on that partition.

I agreee with phil22

The hard drive should not be partitioned and formatted if new. I would consider returning it for security reasons.

See the link below to understand the two types.
