Windows Security update for C++ could not be read - error 8024000B - downloaded solution from Microsoft, tried to install again, but system is now stuck on installing update screen on restart.
Tried to shut down and restart, diverting to DOS via F2: this worked before, but now will not - the computer does not shut down.
Would be grateful for any advice - please bear in mind that I'm not an expert at all.
Thank you.

All sorted, I decided to be patient and let computer alone, having disconnected from power supply; it eventually switched off and I successfully rebooted.
Panic over!!
For information:
update was KB2538243 for Microsoft C++
The solution offered obviously does not work!
Be ye warned!

Next time you can hold down the start button for something like 10 seconds and it will always force a shut down.
There are ways to repair Windows update when an otherwise good update does not work, it depends if this update is important to you personally and how much work you want to do. I had trouble with SP1 on only one W7 machine and after waiting months to see if they fixed the update it still would not work (other machines worked no problem). I spent hours trying all repair options until I found the way to completely rebuild the windows update program on the computer and then it worked fine. Doing the update manually and waiting for it to fail gave some options to try (system restore did not work, other Windows repairs did not work), obviously they steer you to the simpler ones first so you have to be persistent about it and keep at it.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Thanks very much for your reply. If I run into any further complications I'll try your advice, with help, of course. :)
