Specs: Windows XP Home, I dont know
Im trying to fix a friends computer. Its a Gateway MX6396, with windowxs xp home. When I turn it on I get the Windows Boot Manager. It says windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. It says to use the windows installation disc to fix it. Then it saya File:\Windows\system32\winload.exe Status: 0xc000035a Info: Attempting to load a 64-bit application, however this CPU is not compatible with 64-bit mode.

So, I tried the disks that came with the computer. There are 3 of them and they are labled Gateway Recovery Disc 1,2 and 3. The first 2 went through fine. But near the last of the 3rd disk, it quit and gave me this error message-

[ResourceExtractToFileByStruct: (seq.50) ->Uncompress or WimCopyFileEx failed]
Restore failed - reason 0x00000070.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Test the Memory with Memtest via a bootable CD. Let it run all tests unless there are errors. If errors rerun the test with one stick of memory at a time. Replace as needed.
If memory is good then test the hard drive similarly with the test utility from the hard drive mfg. the same way.
If both test OK then contact Gateway about replacing the recovery disk set. Tell tech support about the problem and what you have tried already. Chances are they may not charge for the replacement set if you explain it right.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

"If both test OK then contact Gateway about replacing the recovery disk set"

Unfortunately for the OP, Microsoft now forbids Gateway from providing XP recovery discs (I just checked) and the OP did state that it's Windows XP on that computer.

Well I am totally disgusted with Gateway. The,excuse my language, but the jerk I talked to said "well let me assure you that I can fix this problem ,right now, over the phone" I said really? Wow! Then he said for I think it was $169 for insurance for a year. Then he had another type of insurance it would be $99. For something he could do over the phone. I couldnt believe it. I told him my friend couldnt afford anything close to that. I told him I would just borrow another operating system. I told him I know how to format and I can make a copy legal. That I would do that before paying that kind of money. I was totally appalled. He did say something about where it stalls out is when its trying to install drivers, at the end of the 3rd disk. I forgot to say when it stops it just starts into Restore Partition, 4% through. And above the error message it says DECOMPRESSENGINEIMAGEX. So I dont know if you can help me or not, I hope so. I thankyou for your suggestions.
