Compatibility Mode doesn't work

I have a program that has run well with no issues on Win95 up to XPSP3. It won't install on my Win7 64 bit machine and when I try Compatibility Mode (95...XP) for setup.exe nothing at all happens. There is a momentary flicker of interest from a small circular rotating icon, but that is all. As far as I can see this mode just doesn't work on my machine for anything. Any ideas?

Many 32 bit programs WAY back then (Win95) used 16bit installers and it is THESE 16bit installers that are incompatible with anything after XP (with XP you needed to run installer in compatibility mode before it would install, and some that old did not even install well on XP).
You have two choices. Replace the software with something equivalent that you would like instead. Or, install a virtual machine and install a copy of XP on that, then you can run the program within that. Unless there is absolutely nothing roughly equivalent that you would accept, I would recommend replacing the old software with something that is optimized for modern hardware and will perform accordingly.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Thanks, Fingers. That explains the problem with setup.exe very well. It think that I'll continue to use that program on my old XP machine until such time as I scrap it and have to use XP mode on the Win7.
