Can't boot and unknown error

May 21, 2012 at 06:15:34
Specs: windows7, 3.2ghz/512mb
This is on a friends computer screen:

Ijpah(r)Grantsdala)C PCM Accelerapa' SRCA BIOS Bqmh Nqmber: 3410 PC @av 04/12/2000 17:02:20 @ACKIPIHATION OR @MSASSAMBLY PROHIBMPA@ Ckpyrmclt (C) 2000-2003 Intel Corp. Alh Rights Rasarra'.

I suspect that the person that gave this computer to her put a non genuine version of windows7 on it but now i can't boot it . All that appears is what is above. There is a windows xp sticker on the machine and i was going to install windows xp on it for her using the license that is on the side of the machine. I know that she told me there was something on the screen for a while that said something about windows running out. I can't remember eexactly what she said but i thought ok someone installed something that was going to run out then she would have to pay. Anyway since the machine was made for winxp i thought i was going there today to install that plus i put more ram in her machine. The first 5 digits of the above error were colored and the rets in monochrome. Is this because the bios is corrupted? Do i have to flash the bios? I can't think of anything else

I don't know if the specs listed under your name are hers or yours, but 512MB isn't anywhere near enough RAM for Win7. And if there was some sort of "countdown", it was probably the number of days to activation. It doesn't necessarily mean Win7 is non-genuine, it just means it never got activated within 30 days.

Regardless, if all you're seeing on the screen is what you posted, I doubt Windows is the problem. It seems more like a harware issue. Did you check the BIOS to make sure the HDD is being properly recognized?

No i changed the specs. I don't know why but sometimes the things on the newer computing.net site doesn't work....bounces back to specs from a previous post or something not sure. I put in 4 gig of ram. Yes the countdown thing you described is what we are talking about. As i said i can't get into the bios. what is on the screen is ont he screen and can go no further. Oh soprry i see i didn't mention i can't get into the bios....

OK i am going to try and flash the bios via a boot floppy but not sure how to create one in linux. Are there any linux people here that can tell me! I know i have done this before but i forgot. I got the file from the dell site http://www.dell.com/support/drivers...
and i have a usb floppy drive(no internal floppy drive in either of my computers)
ok i found this page on how to mount the floppy drive http://askubuntu.com/questions/6314...
but got this error in the terminal:
Device file /dev/fd is not a block device: Resource temporarily unavailable
