Cannot run .exe file - tried most solutions

December 4, 2011 at 07:37:18
Specs: Windows 7, Intel dual-core i5 2x 2.6 Ghz
Hi guys,

As you read, I cannot run a particular program that I could run 2 days ago.
I've tried all the solutions the web had to offer so far.
I've renewed my exe-file associations with new registry files (the thing where you
had to merge it with your desktop). Didn't work.

Read; I've even been booting up in safe mode multiple times while trying to do this and rebooted every time.

I've been looking for an infection on my pc that could be causing this, but then again;
Found absolutely nothing. I ran norton 360 Internet Security with the latest updates,
ESET nod32, Malwarebytes Antimalware and now I'm even running spyhunter (because I'm also having trouble with my explorer crashing, but that's an other problem I try to deal with).

I even did special rootkit scans, and found nothing.

The web says, that if most solutions do NOT work, it's probably a virus/infection.
But, my notebook (asus Intel i5 dual core) can run almost all programs very fluid and fast.

I hope, that there is someone who can help me fix this.

Problem no. 2 ; Windows Explorer;

I tried shutting off all my shell extensions, services etc.
So Windows booted in safe mode (including clean boot, same time) and the problem kept existing,

So the error lies in windows itsself. My guts tell me there came some kind of hotfix / update from windows at some point that ruined my explorer. I must make a sidenote here, that this problem with my explorer started after I installed and deinstalled one and the same program maybe 30 times. (yes, really crazy but it was for my profession).

I hope I can get help here! Thanks in advance guys!!

The fact that every other program you run is working fine suggests the problem lies with the program that stopped running, and not Windows.

How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

No, I can't tell what is going on if the program name is a secret. What is it????

While we are at it, what is the deal with the second problem. All you say is window explorer but you didn't tell us any problem.

Re #2, second line:
Well, there was a brief mention earlier:
"I'm also having trouble with my explorer crashing".

It is possible that you have two separate problems.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Yes, the two problems are separate ones, that must be clear.

The program I cannot run is Counterstrike 1.6 (cstrike.exe).
There were problems with it in the past, but then I had put in properties to let it run compatible for windows xp sp2 and the problems were solved. But all of a sudden it stopped doing that. But, as this is just a game it's not my priority. Rather a good windows explorer than a game running, but both running proper ly would be great.

The most important one for me is my explorer crashing all the time.
Very annoying when you are managing your files.

What do you want to know about my explorer crashing?
There are no certain ''situations'' where it crashes more than others, it just crashes alot. Alltough I must say it seems to work better when I not click on folders, but use the tabs on the left side of the explorer. Maybe just a coincidence.

I have no windows debugger tools but I could download it if someone here wants the dumpfiles.

Let me know what you guys think about it and thanks.

ps. Explorer; it just says;
Windows explorer stopped working...... Windows explorer is restarting....
While doing that, my entire taskbar at the bottom (where '''start'' is) drops away and refreshes.

"I have no windows debugger tools but I could download it if someone here wants the dumpfiles"

They are included in this program, which will give you live links to any problems it finds.
