Solved Cannot open EXE Files

July 14, 2011 at 11:28:03
Specs: Windows 7 Home, SP 1, 64 bit, 500G / 4G
Cannot Open ANY Programs. Screen goes to choose download method,
Regular/Accelerated. Asks if you want to run or save the program. When you click run or save, the screen goes back to Choose Download Method.. This occurs on all programs including IE,
Google, all internal programs, etc.

"Cannot Open ANY Programs". Do your really mean that or is it just downloads?

Do browsers, media players etc open?

Hi Derek; Thanks for your interest.. I can open files such as documents, etc.
What has happened is all my icons have all changed to the ie icon on everything that has exe and or dll, therefor I cannot open any file, even through ie. I can't even
open my AVG anti virus to do a scan.. Anything I download, I cannot open. All that happens is I get asked to click run or save and it does't matter what I click, nothing happens... Best Regards ,,,,,,,
Dave

Go here:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...

Download the exe fix. I think it best to Save it into a spare folder then double click the saved reg file. Agree all Prompts.

Let me know if this helps. It should, but if not check your system again after reboot, just in case the registry entry change is not picked up immediately.

[By the way .dll files never open or run in their own right]

Glad to hear it. Worth keeping that link in case any other extensions go astray. Bear in mind that it sets to default (even if you have set an extension to open with something else).

Have you tried Neotrek File Data Pro. Just about any file can be opened.

Hello,

This issue just happened to me also. What happened was there was this
executive program I thought had to be opened with internet explorer so I made it the default program without knowing that all my exe's were now going to do this also. I cannot open any other browsers, anti-virus programs or oddly enough even internet explorer itself. That's why I can't use Derek's solution at this time. Any other ideas?

Download the fix at #3 on another computer. Transfer it onto a flash stick, then on your dud computer double click it on the flash stick and follow the prompts.

The alternative is to make manual changes to the registry. I can probably help if you have to go this way.

You should read the whole thread. The issue had been already been solved some time before you responded.

Problem, as I see it, is that juanramos55 can't use any browsers to get to the website and apply that fix.
