Cannot boot this Dell Inspiron 2120 mini laptop, PLEASE HELP

July 22, 2013 at 12:51:20
Specs: Windows 7 Home, 4gb
A customer brought me this mini laptop to repair because it wouldn't boot. When I turn it on it starts to boot, then it gets to a blank screen with "Microsoft Corporation" written across the bottom and that's as far as it gets. It will not go into any of the safe mode options, always hanging at Classpnp.sys. Last know config does nothing. Startup repair does not help. Windows repair disk hangs at the same blank screen. I also ran Hiren's boot cd and removed 2 viruses but it still won't boot. I put the hard drive in a full size laptop with a dvd drive and was actually able to run Windows repair disk. I finally got it to boot to login screen in the full size laptop but got a BSOD. I then shut down and removed the drive and put it back in the mini but I still end up at the same blank screen. I guess my main problem is, no matter if I try to boot Windows, a repair cd, or even a repair flash drive, I get the same results...It hangs at the blank screen with "Microsoft Corporation" at the bottom. You guys have any ideas how to fix this thing? I thought about just Re-installing Windows but I can't do that either because as soon as the Windows Install disk hits that same screen, it hangs.

Faulty motherboard most likely.

If the mini is getting to the point that Windows attempts to start then that doesn't sound like a faulty motherboard.

Is there a memory card in the reader?

Is the BIOS setup to defaults?

Googling for "Classpnp.sys" Yields several hits. See the link below.

" I put the hard drive in a full size laptop with a dvd drive and was actually able to run Windows repair disk"
If you have a Windows CD & product number, put the drive in the full size laptop.

I would try deleting all partitions & formatting to NTFS, maybe using Hiren's boot cd.

Next, put the drive back into the mini.

You now need W7 on a thumb drive.

Make sure the bios is set to boot from the thumb/flash drive.

I was thinking the same thing OtheHill. If it was a motherboard problem it would be more erratic, and not hanging in the same place every time. No mem card in the reader. Bios is set to defaults. Gonna try JohnW's solution when I get home. Thanks guys.

Did you look at the links from #2 above?

Did you verify there is no other media inserted anywhere?

Yes I looked at the links and no, there is no media inserted anywhere.

Also just tried a JohnW's idea, and it STILL hangs at exactly the same place. Could it be a bios problem somehow? I can get into bios though without a problem.

The error seems to be hardware related. If the hard drive seems to be OK because you connected it to another computer, then there may be some other hardware issue.

To determine if this is a hardware issue I suggest you try booting to a live version of Linux. The link below is for Linux puppy on a flash drive.
