Solved Can you restore computer to work. dell xps 420

Specs: Windows 7
i cannot boot my comp. when powering on i get a black screen asking me for the system password. after entering i get various messages like: failed to detect one or more drives during POST. selected boot device not available.

That would seem to indicate the hard drive has failed. Check that the power & data cables are securely connected to the drive. Also check the BIOS settings to see if the HDD is being properly recognized & that the boot order is correct. If it's not recognized, it's probably fried, in which case it will have to be replaced & Windows reinstalled. Hopefully you have your data backed up.

Are you OK with burning a dvd from a downloaded file? If so then you could verify it is the drive by booting with a Linux dvd. Once that has booted the system - it loads itself in RAM only, doesn't touch the hard drive - it presents a windows style desktop. From there you can find the hard drive... It can't be found then probably that hard drive has failed...

Go to ubuntu.com. Download a free iso (disk image) for ubuntu. Burn it to a dvd. Boot your problem computer with the dvd. Do not seek to install it the hard drive - even it seems to find it at boot up.
