I can't find any reference to a ._xls file.
However you can download the Excel viewer from Microsoft and see if that helps.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...
You could try removing the underscore and see if it will open. Otherwise get him to make sure he saves the files as XLS, he can use file save as, then select the correct extension.

There is also a Microsoft Office compatibility pack you can download from Microsoft.

1- Ask your friend to resave the file 'save as' and select 'excel '97' as he probably has office 2010.
2- Or you can try as in #2 above.
3- Or you can download and install openoffice.org and use that to open it and resave it as 'excel '97' in there (this is how I solved a similar problem at work about 2 weeks ago).

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Thanks guys open office works a treat.
I also found how to open with excel
I have to save the file then open excel and select open.
Then I get a warning and have to verify that it is not corrupt as it is not supported format. If I say yes I can open and see the data.

If you 'save as' in openoffice and select the excel '97 option then you will eliminate the format issue.
