Solved Can not open Anything but docs. No IE, all antivirus etc off

February 21, 2012 at 16:14:00
Specs: Windows XP, cable/4GB
Every time I try to go online internet explorer I click and nothing happens. All anti virus' do the same thing. Anti Maleware same thing. I can go to my pictures and music OK, but thats it. Connects to my router but nothing opens. I was watching a basketball game online then boom! Said something about error and shut down. When I reboot it was all messed up. I have tried Safemode twice and both times I restored to an earlier time. Neither worked. I do not know much about RKill but I downloaded on my wifes PC and plugged in my thumb drive with the "free" version (which makes no sense because all it does it let you run a scan then you need to pay to have it do anything) but even that would not open. Everything I click just sits there. On the bottom right it says that all of my security is off and that I cant put it back on. This is killing me as everything I do is over this laptop uncluding work. Please Help!!!

Try the EXE fix from here:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...

If it helps then run your AV scans and also MalwareBytes freebie as it sometimes finds what AV's miss.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

You didnt get RKILL .. RKILL is free.

http://download.bleepingcomputer.co...

You will need to run RKILL in safemode and after running rkill then you should be able to run MalwareBytes AntiMalware:

http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.p...

rkill ijust kills the processes blocking you from running you antivirus/malware programs.

If your computer was just running along just fine and then went out and now does not open and look properly then it may not be a virus.

Explain what you are seeing when you boot up .. you say things look odd?

ScoobyDoo, thanks for the quick reply. I googled RKILL and every site took me to the same place and I downloaded that.

I am going to try your links now.

As far as what I am seeing when I start it up, it seems a little bit slower than usual but nothing too extreme. I did a system restore back to a week prior. The desktop looks normal. I can click on documents, but any program or internet shortcut just clicks and no more. Also it says on the bottom right that I have to SOLVE 4 PC issues (all 4 being my anti virus, firewall, security, etc.)

I was watching a Knicks game through a link a friend gave me because I had a snow storm and couldnt watch on TV due to the satelite not working. Kept getting pop up ads then next thing you know I had some kind of system crash and it restarted and hasnt been right since then.

Please let me know if there is any other info I could give you that could help with this.

Thank you!

I just tried all three of your links. No links opened up.

I am on a laptop that isnt having any issues so not sure what the problem is with those links.

The RKILL I downloaded was from this site and it did not open on my laptop (the infected one) but it did run on my wifes PC and the rial just scans but wants $69.99 to do anything else... http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...

****New UPDATE***

Tried everything from the site. The top 3 downloads on this site: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow... wanted a register fee. I dont even care at this point. But I clicked on the 7 links below in blue and all 7 I "Save"d instead of "Run"ing it and then copied to my portable drive and plugged into my laptop. Pulled them up in safemode and boom. Nothing, I click on it and nothing opens... This is killing me.

Try AVG Rescue CD
Try Kaspersky Rescue Disk
Both create bootable CD's that can scan your system from outside of Windows when any infection cannot be active. You will need to reset your BIOS so it boots to the CD/DVD drive first before your hard drive, then boot to it (either one first, the other if needed), if needed 'press any key to boot from CD'.
If they do not work, use Puppy Linux (also bootable CD/DVD) to save your important files and then reinstall Windows with Install disk or recovery disk/recovery partition with a factory restore.
It DOES sound like you have a nasty infection as evidenced by the inability to run executables including your scanning software or download anything that also might help.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Fingers I tried the AVG cd. I couldnt open it on my laptop. How is it that I can run this before the PC starts? I tried in safemode but I am not sure if I am doing the BIOS like you suggested.

Any help would be so great. Please and thank you! I will give contact info if someone can please help,

Would it fix the issue if I rebooted to factory default?

Also, I took all of my docs, pics, songs and some programs and backed them up on a "Clickfree" device I bought. But are these all infected with the cirus still?

Sorry to sound so nuts here but I dont know what to do and I am freaking out.

Thank you all

If it is a Rescue disk you made from a downloaded ISO image then it is bootable which means that your system will boot to the Rescue CD rather than your Windows operating system and allow it to scan everything while it it inactive. You will need to make sure that your boot order has your CD /DVD drive before your hard drive on the list. Look to your manual to see your key to tap during boot up to access your BIOS set up (or try the disk first to see if it works already). With many systems if you have a CD drive before your hard drive in the boot order you will need to 'tap any key' when prompted or it will skip the CD drive (usually 3 to 5 seconds) and go directly to Windows.
