Shouldn't be a problem, and Word 2010 should be able to open the Word 2K3 documents fine. It may ask if you want to save them as Word 2010 documents when you close them, however.

Save your documents as .doc and not .docx otherwise people to whom you send Word documents to and are still using 2003 will not be able to open them.

that will no be a problem, they are compatible! you could open files by using both of the versions.

What features does Word 2010 have that Word 2003 doesn't have?

Ewan, you need the Office 2007 Compatability Pack which allows even Office 2000 to open later docs and spreadsheets: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down...

"... one hell of a confusing tool/menu bar!"

Yep, and I'll bet that's one of the reasons people are hesitant to move up beyond Office 2K3. It's one of the big reasons I moved to OpenOffice/LibreOffice...
