Specs: Windows XP
I just got a new lop top with windows 7 and i am trying to connect it to my router. I found the mac address, but when I entered into the device to add it, it told me that the mac address was invalid. Is there a fix for this?

If trying to connect via Wireless you need the Encryption Key, if you are connecting via RJ45 Cable, it should connect. This is assuming theNetgear is acting as a DHCP Server.

You appear to have left out any specifications of your hardware...

Which MAC address ? There are two MAC addresses. The wireless network card MAC and the wired network card MAC that come installed in the laptop.

Alternatively, you may disable the MAC address filtering in the router. It is of no use except for twarthing the attacks by the noobs. Instead, give the wireless a strong encryption.

you do not need a mac address unless the router is set to allow only mac addresses to connect.
can you see the router in your wifi networks, then all you need to do is click connect and put in the wifi key.
otherwise connect to the router via network cable, and reset the router software and setup from there, you can set it to use your mac address or just a wep key,
you can reset a router with a pin or pen in a small reset hole generally on the back of the router, that will clear or presets and set it too the original setup. and work from there.

i hate computers!
but cant help myself....

Thanks, I was able to get the router to accept the mac address, but the lap top still does not connect. It is able to see it in the list of connections available but it fails to connect. I normally connect all my devices to the router using a mac address, it makes me feel a little more secured because not just anyone can use my wireless. I will try connecting it to the wall and see if I am able to reconfigure the router.

In order to connect NETGEAR router to the Internet you would have to follow certain steps.

First you would have to plug the NETGEAR router into the electrical socket and then connect the DSL or cable modem to the Internet port of the router with the help of an Ethernet cable.

With the help of a separate Ethernet cable connect your system to the router.

Then open your Web browser and type the necessary address in the address bar.

After that when the log-in Window appears you would have to enter the specific username and password. Click on the Setup Wizard and then on yes.

By doing so it would automatically detect your Internet connection type, Finally, configure your router by providing the necessary ISP, username and password.
